WebSep 30, 2004 · Posts: n/a. My neighbor suggested that I break up my old cast iron tub (vintage 1963) to ease its removal. After many whalings with a 24 oz hammer, I successfully destroyed the porcelain in the immediate area and created a crack with a small hole. And I am somewhat of a big guy (200#), and am in good physical condition.

Unlike rock or masonry, even cast iron can locally deform (a little) to relieve strain. The porcelain will chip (and spall like crazy into you), but not the tub. Beat it out like everybody else!
