Pull it up and there is a notch to lock it in the neutral postion so you can put the PTO lever in 540 or 1000. That lever is next to the PTO handle on the lower left side of the tractor seat. The only cross over point I can think of (admittedly I dont know the 990 that well but I recently acquired a 995) is the power steering pump but thats a pretty small reservoir.

Some DB:s can drop a screw from the rocker shaft and loose oil pressure that way.

The problem is worse if the shift lever boots are torn or missing.
