As long as you follow some guidelines, they don’t have to be paid back like a student loan. Where these forms of free money tend to differ is how they are awarded. Grants are often need-based. WebPell grants can only be received for 12 semesters or six years of college attendance. The amount of any other financial aid does not affect the amount received from the Pell grant. You have to apply for Pell Grants annually through the FAFSA. In 2024, the maximum amount that could be awarded through Pell Grants was $6,495.
